Biography:

Niklas Elmqvist is a professor in the College of Information Studies (iSchool) and director of the Human-Computer Interaction Lab (HCIL).

Elmqvist’s research focuses on information visualization, human-computer interaction, and visual analytics. Specifically, he concentrates on visualization for intelligence amplification—using visual tools for improving the perceptive, cognitive, and analytical capabilities of people, allowing them to solve tasks that were previously too large or too complex.

He received his doctorate in computer science from Chalmers University of Technology in 2006.

Before joining UMIACS, Elmqvist was an assistant professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University and director of the Pivot Laboratory. He was awarded the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award in 2013, given to outstanding junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars so they can further their research in their areas of expertise.
